Warning Labels Now Required on Marijuana Edibles Sold in Washington

WA Edibles

Beginning on Valentine’s Day, all marijuana edibles sold in Washington must have a label saying “Not for Kids” on them. The label must be very visible. Edibles and beverages require this labeling.

The label must incorporate the new warning or must be a separate sticker, according to The Olympian. The label includes the phone number for the Washington Poison Center. This is for parents whose children accidentally ingest the edibles or beverages – for the most part, it is to make sure the children haven’t had too much and aren’t experiencing symptoms of overdose.

The labels include a red hand and a the written words “NOT FOR KIDS”. This policy was enacted to separate marijuana-containing products from regular candy and beverage items – to make sure people and children can tell the difference.

Brian Smith of the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board said, “A lot of them look like a regular package. We want to be easily identified as a product containing marijuana.”

Parents that use marijuana edibles and beverages are urged to show their children the labels and tell them that these are not for them. Parents should be adamant that the products are off-limits. Parents are also reminded to keep marijuana edibles and infused drinks out of the reach of children.

All calls to the Washington Poison Center are confidential.
