Washington’s Tax Revenue from Marijuana Sales Is Piling High

Cannabis Tax Washington

The 2017 fiscal year just started in July 1 and the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board has already collected $148,504,445 in total excise taxes. Recent data, broken down by month, indicates that retail marijuana sales are increasing slightly. The end of the 2016 fiscal year (June 30) resulted in the collection of $19,929,124.

For December alone, $22,802,286 was collected in excise taxes, according to Sequim Gazette.  Some speculate that the increased retail sales could be due to a challenged medical marijuana market. The medical marijuana program faces challenges due to the Cannabis Patient Protection Act (CPPA) that went into effect on July 1.

The CPPA basically took away collective gardens and a lot of the medical marijuana dispensaries. For patients, purchasing their medicine after the CPPA going into effect – costs them much more.

Owners of two recreational marijuana stores in Washington State, Heather and Anthony Owen, have been able to maintain two retail stores while maintaining the same profit. This represents industry stability and sustainability.
